Nelson to Christchurch: The Top of the South Island Long Transfer

Nelson holds the title of New Zealand's sunniest city with statistical consistency that the rest of the country finds mildly irritating. Sheltered by the Richmond Ranges from the south and open to Cook Strait in the north, it catches more sun than any other city in the country and has the lifestyle to match — outdoor markets, working artists, serious wine and food, and the gateway to Abel Tasman National Park.

Christchurch, four to five hours to the south, is the South Island's main city and primary international gateway. Between them lies the upper South Island interior — Marlborough, the Kaikōura Coast, or the inland Lewis Pass route — and the choice between these routes determines the kind of journey you have.

Route Option 1: Via Blenheim and Kaikōura (Coastal)

The coastal route runs east from Nelson through Blenheim — the heart of the Marlborough wine region, surrounded by sauvignon blanc vines — and then south along SH1 down the dramatic Kaikōura Coast.

The Kaikōura stretch is one of the most spectacular highway sections in New Zealand. The Seaward Kaikōura Range rises directly from the sea, pressing the road into a narrow strip between cliff and Pacific. Sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and New Zealand fur seals occupy these waters year-round. A stop at the Kaikōura viewpoint — twenty minutes off the road — can deliver dolphin or whale sightings that would cost hundreds of dollars at a dedicated tour operator.

From Kaikōura, the road continues south through the gentler coastal farmland of North Canterbury before joining the Canterbury Plains at Waipara — the Waipara wine district, notable for its pinot noir and riesling — and then the final 70 kilometres to Christchurch.

Total distance: approximately 430 kilometres. Driving time: 4.5 to 5 hours without extended stops.

Route Option 2: Via the Lewis Pass (Inland)

The inland route runs south from Nelson through Hope, up the Buller Gorge, and over the Lewis Pass (864 metres) before descending to the Hurunui district and the Canterbury Plains. It's less travelled, considerably quieter, and passes through the kind of native beech forest interior that road travellers rarely see.

The Maruia Springs resort sits at the base of the pass on the western side — a thermal resort in the forest, popular with locals. The pass itself is forested and wet, with the Hurunui River running alongside the road on the descent. By the time the road emerges onto the Canterbury Plains, the landscape has changed completely — open, flat, enormous.

The Lewis Pass route is approximately the same total time as the coastal route but suits different travellers. If you're interested in remote forest driving and prefer to avoid the SH1 tourist traffic around Kaikōura, it's the better choice. If you want coastline and the chance of whale sightings, take the coastal route.

Split Apple Retreat as a Departure Point

Split Apple Retreat, the world-class wellness lodge perched above Tasman Bay near Motueka, is one of the primary departure points for this transfer. The lodge sits 45 minutes west of Nelson, which adds to the start of the journey but delivers one of the finest lodge experiences in the South Island as the setting.

Guests finishing their Split Apple Retreat stay and continuing to Christchurch — typically for an international departure from Christchurch Airport — have a direct private transfer covering the full route. A 9am departure from the lodge delivers to Christchurch by mid-afternoon.

Owen River Lodge

Owen River Lodge, in the upper Buller Valley near Murchison, is another departure point for this transfer — and a natural staging post for the Lewis Pass route. Guests finishing a flyfishing stay at Owen River Lodge and continuing to Christchurch follow a route that runs directly through the beech forest interior of the upper South Island.

Cost and Practicalities

Nelson to Christchurch by private transfer costs from approximately $120 per person for two passengers. The coastal and inland routes are similarly priced — the choice is made based on preference and conditions rather than cost.

The Kaikōura stretch of SH1 was significantly damaged by the November 2016 earthquake and has been rebuilt. The road is now in excellent condition but remains geologically active — the drive past the Kaikōura ranges, with fresh landslide scars visible on the faces above the road, is a reminder of the forces at work in this part of New Zealand.
