The distance from Auckland Airport to Taupō township is approximately 280 kilometres, following State Highway 1 south through the Waikato and into the volcanic plateau. In a private vehicle, the drive takes around three hours, depending on traffic through Hamilton and conditions on the southern approach.

The route is straightforward but not short. After clearing the southern Auckland motorway, the highway opens into the flat, green expanse of the Waikato — New Zealand's dairy heartland.
