This is not an exaggeration. A standard triathlon bike case — whether it is a hardshell case like a Scicon AeroTech Evolution, a B&W International, or a Thule RoundTrip — measures approximately 130 to 145 centimetres long, 40 to 50 centimetres wide, and 80 to 100 centimetres tall. It weighs, with a bike inside, between 18 and 30 kilograms depending on the case and the bike.
These dimensions do not fit in the boot of a standard sedan. They do not fit across the back seat of a standard SUV. They certainly do not fit in the overhead rack of a shuttle bus. For athletes who have arranged a standard airport transfer, a taxi, or a ride-share, the bike case creates an immediate and stressful logistics problem at exactly the moment when you want your New Zealand journey to begin smoothly.

Why Bike Cases Are a Specialist Transport Requirement
To understand why this matters, consider what is inside that case. A triathlon bike represents an investment of anywhere from NZ$3,000 for a competitive entry-level machine to NZ$25,000 or more for a top-tier time trial setup. Carbon frames are light but fragile. Disc wheels cost thousands. Electronic shifting systems are precision instruments. Integrated aero cockpits are difficult and expensive to replace if damaged.
The bike case exists to protect this equipment during air freight. It is designed to absorb the impacts of airport baggage handling — drops, stacking, conveyor impacts. But the case itself is not designed to be jammed sideways into a vehicle that cannot accommodate it, balanced on top of suitcases, or strapped to a roof rack with improvised ties.

Groups of three to six athletes: A large van or people-mover configuration with dedicated cargo space. For team entries, training squads, or groups of friends racing together, we can transport multiple bike cases in a single vehicle with all passengers travelling together.
Larger groups or clubs: For organised groups, triathlon clubs, or corporate teams, we can arrange multiple vehicles travelling in convoy or staggered across the day. Some clubs prefer to send bike cases ahead in a dedicated cargo vehicle while athletes travel separately — we accommodate both approaches.
In every case, the bike case is handled by our driver at pickup and delivery. We load, we secure, we unload at your accommodation. You do not need to wrestle a 25-kilogram case into a vehicle at the airport or manoeuvre it out at the other end.
The Auckland Airport Pickup Process
Bike cases at Auckland Airport arrive on the oversized baggage carousel — a separate collection point from standard luggage. The process for IRONMAN athletes is:
- Clear customs and immigration as normal.
- Collect your standard luggage from the main carousel.
- Collect your bike case from the oversized baggage area.
- Proceed to the arrivals hall with all your gear.
- Meet your LandFlight driver at the designated pickup point.
Our driver will assist with loading. The vehicle will be waiting in the pickup zone — not in a car park that requires a shuttle or a walk. We know that an athlete arriving with a bike case, a suitcase, a carry-on, and a transition bag does not want to push a loaded trolley across a car park. The vehicle is at the kerb.
If your bike case is delayed by the airline — which does happen, particularly on connecting international services — we can wait within reason, or arrange a separate collection and delivery once the case arrives. What About Assembled Bikes?
Some athletes choose to have their bikes assembled at the airport or at a bike shop in Auckland before travelling to Taupō. An assembled triathlon bike cannot travel inside a vehicle in the conventional sense — it needs to be secured upright or in a bike-specific rack arrangement.
LandFlight can transport assembled bikes in our larger vehicles using protective padding and securing systems. However, we generally recommend that athletes transport their bikes in cases to Taupō and assemble them there. Several bike mechanics operate in Taupō during IRONMAN week, and the race expo typically includes professional assembly and tuning services.

The Wheel Bag Issue
Many triathletes travel with separate wheel bags for disc wheels or deep-section race wheels that do not fit inside the main bike case. These bags are typically 70 to 80 centimetres in diameter and add significantly to the total luggage volume.
When booking, please advise us if you are travelling with wheel bags in addition to your main bike case. This affects vehicle selection and ensures we dispatch a vehicle with sufficient space for everything — bike case, wheel bags, transition bag, personal luggage, and you.
Pricing: Per Vehicle, Not Per Bike Case
LandFlight pricing for the Auckland Airport to Taupō transfer is per vehicle, not per item of luggage or per bike case. This means that a couple travelling with two bike cases and two suitcases pays the same as a couple travelling with two small carry-ons — provided the same vehicle class is required.
For larger groups, the per-person cost decreases as more athletes share the vehicle. A van carrying four athletes and four bike cases is significantly more cost-effective per person than four individual sedan transfers — and it is the only vehicle configuration that actually accommodates four bike cases.
Beyond Race Day: The Return Journey
After IRONMAN New Zealand on 6 March 2027, most athletes have between one and three days in Taupō before departing. The return transfer to Auckland Airport involves the same considerations in reverse: the bike case, the transition bag, the personal luggage, and an athlete who is substantially more fatigued than they were on arrival.
Post-race transfers should be booked at the same time as your inbound transfer. We will confirm a pickup time from your Taupō accommodation and deliver you to Auckland Airport in time for your departure — with your bike case handled, loaded, and secured by our driver.
