Why Not a Shuttle?

During IRONMAN week, various shuttle services operate between Auckland and Taupō. These are shared services that collect multiple passengers from the airport and deliver them to central Taupō on a fixed schedule.

Shuttles have their place, but for IRONMAN athletes they present specific limitations:

• Bike case capacity is limited or absent. Most shuttles cannot accommodate full-sized bike cases. Some will allow a case if space permits, but cannot guarantee it.
• Fixed schedules. Shuttles depart at set times regardless of your flight arrival. If your flight is delayed, the shuttle leaves without you.
• Multiple stops. Shared services make multiple drop-offs, adding 30 to 60 minutes to the journey time.
• No door-to-door. Shuttles typically drop at a central point in Taupō, not at your accommodation. You then need to arrange onward transport with your bike case — exactly the problem you were trying to avoid.
