From Taupo, SH1 north to Auckland is the standard route — through the Waikato, over the Bombay Hills. Three and a half hours total from the lodge to Auckland city, four hours to the international airport.

Alternatively, SH2 runs the entire length of the east coast from Napier north to Auckland via Gisborne and Opotiki — a much longer but intensely scenic route along the Mahia Peninsula and the East Cape. This is not an airport-run option. It's a full day's drive and requires an early start.
