Paihia announces itself through mangroves and tidal flats before the bay appears — the same bay where Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed in 1840, where the first European missions established themselves, where the modern New Zealand story arguably began. For international visitors, this geographical and historical context makes the ground arrival richer than anything the window seat of a regional jet can offer.
